Course objective and description
In September of 2000, the
191 United Nation Member States pledged that they would strive to meet
nine Millennium Development Goals. The fifth of these goals states that
the maternal mortality ratio must be reduced by three quarters. This means
that maternal health worldwide must improve. Currently, more than 500,000
women lose their lives each year to preventable complications during
pregnancy and child birth. Almost 99% of these women reside in developing
countries.
Topics
In July of 2006, the IFMSA
Summer School on Reproductive Health will focus on maternal health. This
educational course will focus on the medical, social, and ethical issues
surrounding conception, pregnancy, and child birth. The causes of maternal
mortality and morbidity will be emphasized. The summer school will not
only consist of interactive lectures and conferences, but the programme
will also include discussions, excursions and workshops that deal with
maternal health issues.
